Second Sunday in Lent
Usage Note:
The Collect for the First Day in Lent (Ash Wednesday) may be used following the weekly Collect throughout Lent.
Design for Worship:
This week's Design for Worship reminds us, as an early version of the Collect intoned, that we are "destitute" of any power when it comes to the well-being of our body and soul without God as our protector. We are exhorted to keep our bodies and minds pure and then given an example of God's power over principalities and powers to both heal the body and cleanse the soul.
Epistle Lesson:
1 Thessalonians 4: 1-8
Gospel Lesson:
Matthew 15: 21-28.
Revised Collect:
Almighty God, You see that we have no power of our own to help ourselves; keep us outwardly and inwardly, in body and soul, defending us from all ills that may befall the body and from all evil thoughts that may assault and hurt the soul; through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Original Collect:
Almighty God, who seest that we have no power of ourselves to help ourselves; Keep us both outwardly in our bodies, and inwardly in our souls; that we may be defended from all adversities which may happen to the body, and from all evil thoughts which may assault and hurt the soul; through Jesus Christ our Lord.
