Third Sunday in Lent
Usage Note:
The Collect for the First Day in Lent (Ash Wednesday) may be used following the weekly Collect throughout Lent.
Design for Worship:
This week's Design for Worship, like last week's enforces the need for God to defend us. Last week the design was general, including body and soul. This week's Design for Worship focuses more specifically on our need of Christ's protection of our soul.
Epistle Lesson:
Ephesians 5: 1-14
Gospel Lesson:
Luke 11: 14-28
Historical Note on Collect:
It has been the practice in many churches for many centuries to use Easter as a special occasion for having new members join church. Consequently the Lenten Season also progressed toward this same end. The preparation of new members is also reflected in the earliest versions of this week's Collect where the use the word "vow" in place of our "heartfelt desires," anticipates the vows which would be taken as part of church membership.
Revised Collect:
Almighty God, consider the heartfelt desires of Your humble servants and with the outstretched right hand of Your Majesty defend us against all our enemies; through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Original Collect:
We beseech thee, Almighty God, look upon the hearty desires of thy humble servants, and stretch forth the right hand of thy Majesty, to be our defense against all our enemies; through Jesus Christ our Lord.
