Note:
The Collect and Lessons for Easter Even were not used in Morning Prayer prior to 1662, though the Scottish Church included them in 1637. An alternate Collect is included in some historical material, we have included a revised version below. Baptism is the sign of the new life. It was the practice of the early church to perform baptisms on Resurrection Day, as well as receive new members. This is an added reason for the use of baptism in the Collect, in addition to the stated reasons.
Subject:
Death the gate of life.
Epistle Lesson:
1 Peter 3: 17-22
Gospel Lesson:
Matthew 27: 57-66
Revised Alternate Collect:
Most gracious God, look on us in mercy, and as we are baptized into the death of Your Son, our Savior; so by our true and earnest repentance all our sins may be buried with Him, so that we do not fear the grave; that as Christ was raised up from the dead by Your glory, Father, so we also may walk in newness of life, our sins never able to rise in judgement against us; and that for the merit of Jesus Christ, that died, was buried and rose again for us.
Revised Collect:
Lord of Life, as we are baptized into the death of Your blessed Son, our Savior, help us to continually die to our corrupt affections, so that as we pass through the gate of death we may pass to our joyful resurrection and everlasting life; for His merits, who died, was buried, and rose again for us, Jesus Christ our Lord.
Original Collect:
Grant, O Lord, that as we are baptized into the death of thy blessed Son, our Savior Jesus Christ, so by continual mortifying our corrupt affections we may be buried with him; and that through the grave, and gate of death, we may pass to our joyful resurrection; for his merits, who died, and was buried and rose again for us, thy Son Jesus Christ our Lord.
