Epistle Lesson:

Gospel Lesson:

John 19: 1-37

Collects for Good Friday:

There are three Collects for Good Friday. The first prayer is for the family of God as a whole. The second is for the individuals who compose the church. The third is for those outside the church, especially the Old Testament people of God, Israel.

Revised Collects:

Our Father in Heaven, we implore You to graciously help us comprehend what price you paid for the good you have gained for us, your family, for whom our Lord Jesus Christ was willing, even contented, to be betrayed, and given into the hands of wicked men, and to suffer death on the cross; who now lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forevermore.

Almighty, everlasting God, by Your Spirit the whole body of the Church is governed and sanctified; Receive our appeal and prayer for all the members of Your holy Church, that each, in their vocation and ministry, may truly and devoutly serve You; through our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Merciful God, You have made all people and hate nothing that You have made, nor do You desire the death of sinners, but You would rather that they should be converted and live. In gratitude for the new life we have received, we pray, have mercy on all who do not know or deny the faith of Christ crucified. We ask this especially for the children of Your ancient people, Israel. Remove from them: all ignorance, hardness of heart and contempt of Your Word. Blessed Lord, bring them home to Your flock, that they may be among the saved, the true Israel; and make of us all one fold, under one shepherd, Jesus Christ our Lord; who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.

Original Collects:

Almighty God, we beseech thee graciously to behold this thy family, for which our Lord Jesus Christ was contented to be betrayed, and given up into the hands of wicked men, and to suffer death upon the cross; who now liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Ghost, ever one God, world without end.

Almighty and everlasting God, by whose Spirit the whole body of the Church is governed and sanctified; Receive our supplications and prayers, which we offer before thee for all estates of men in thy holy Church, that every member of the same, in his vocation and ministry, may truly and godly serve thee; through our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

O Merciful God, who hast made all men, and hatest nothing that thou hast made nor desirest the death of a sinner, but rather that he should be converted and live; Have mercy upon all who neglect thy Gospel; and especially upon the children of thine ancient people Israel; and take from them all ignorance, hardness of heart, and contempt of thy Word; and so fetch them home, blessed Lord, to thy flock, that they may be saved among the remnant of the true Israelites, and be made one fold under one shepherd, Jesus Christ our Lord; who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, world without end.
