Pentecost
Alternate Name:
Whitsunday
Note about names:
The name Whitsunday probably comes from White Sunday. It was the practice of many churches to use this Sunday for baptisms and white was the color worn by those to be baptized. However, there is also evidence that the term may be a corrupt form of Pentecost from it's earlier roots. Pentecost is an Old Testament festival which occurred 50 days after Passover. Pentecost means fiftieth.
Subject:
The Comforter.
Design for Worship:
This week's design for worship encourages us to be steadfast and obedient in the faith, and to trust God for strength to do this by the power of the Holy Spirit.
Epistle Lesson:
Acts 10: 34-48
Gospel Lesson:
John 3: 16-21
Revised Collect:
Gracious God, at Pentecost You taught the hearts of Your faithful people, by sending to them the light of Your Holy Spirit; Give us, we pray, the same Spirit to have a right judgment in all things, and to eternally rejoice in His holy comfort; through the merits of Christ Jesus our Savior, who lives and reigns with You, in the unity of the same Spirit, one God, for ever and evermore.
Original Collect:
O God, who as at this time didst teach the hearts of thy faithful people, by sending to them the light of thy Holy Spirit; Grant us by the same Spirit to have a right judgment in all things, and evermore to rejoice in his holy comfort; through the merits of Christ Jesus our Saviour, who liveth and reigneth with thee, in the unity of th esame Spirit, one God, world without end.
